Theodore V. Affinito, 24, of 435 Orchard Street, Carlstadt, NJ, was killed in a ground collision of two training planes at the Eagle Pass Army Airfield on Sunday, March 5, 1944. His family had been informed by Colonel John H. Bundy, commanding officer at the field. Theodore, who was a former chemical warfare officer, had been transferred to the Army Air Forces and was a student officer in pilot training. Lieutenant Elvert M. Brown, 24, of Brooklyn, NY, instructor in the plane, convalesced from injuries in the Eagle Pass Army Airfield Station Hospital. The occupant of the other plane escaped unhurt. He was born in East Rutherford, attended grammar school there and East Rutherford High School. After he moved with his family in Carlstadt, he was on the high school football team. He also played baseball for the Carlstadt Cubs. In 1941, he was transferred from the National Guard to the Chemical Warfare Corps, where he was promoted to sergeant and later qualified for officer training school. He won his commission on graduation at Baltimore and then he was transferred to the Air Forces. His last furlough home was in May 1943. Besides his parents, Antonio and Michelina, both of whom are ill in bed, he is survived by a younger sister, Anna, 16. His father suffered a broken ankle in February 1944. Three days after his repatriation, a military funeral was held on the morning of Monday, March 13, 1944. A firing squad was provided by the East Rutherford and Carlstadt American Legion Posts. A service was held at Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, 120 Hoboken Road, East Rutherford, NJ 07073. Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.
