Alfred Anacker, 91, formerly of Portage, died Thursday, May 18, 2017, in the Three Pillars Riverside Lodge in Dousman.

Alfred was born on May 7, 1926, in the town of Caledonia to Edward and Esther (Richert) Anacker. Alfred married Doris Schmidt on June 13, 1953, at St. John’s Lutheran in Portage, and they were married for 63 years. Al was baptized, confirmed and married in St. John’s Lutheran Church. Al served in the U.S. Army and was a longtime member of the Portage Area Veterans Honor Guard. He was employed by the Columbia County Highway Department for 25 years.

Al had a joy for life. He enjoyed Doris’ cooking, loved to be active by walking and riding his bike, reading, listening to polka music and watching the History Channel. Al enjoyed a good conversation with close friends and reminiscing of the good old days. Al was a fan of all Wisconsin sports but he was especially proud of his grandchildren in their activities and sporting events. He could often be found attending to Doris’ gardens and feeding the wildlife in their yard.

Alfred is survived by his son, Steve (Lori) Anacker of Dousman; grandchildren, Jon (Stephanie); Matthew (Lindsay); Michael (Nicole) and great-grandchildren, Jack, Nellie, Carter, Coldon and Madison.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Doris; and four siblings, Lorraine (Lester) Zamzow, Maxine (Harley) Horn, Swain (Arlene) Anacker and Eleanor (Frank) Warnke.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Portage. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Greg Hovland will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery with the Portage Area Veterans Honor Guard attending.
