John Derby was s/o George Henry Derby (b. 14.11.1805 Weston Underwood, North Buckinghamshire) and Rebecca Limbray. George Derby was a thatcher of houses, farm buildings and stacks. John Derby was born in 1840 at Weston and died on 19.11.1886 as a result of an accident while felling bush. He arrived in New Zealand in 1874 and was the last of the family to emigrate.
Alfred farmed at various places before logging native bush at Toko for the New Plymouth Sash and Company, two teams of eight yokes each, thirty-two bullocks in all. He eventually sold out and moved to a farm in Road near Urenui, and remained there until he retired to Cracroft Street, Waitara in 1939.
