(1922 - 2012)

Stephen Urbanec, 89, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2012, at Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Heights, Ill., surrounded by his family.

Born Aug. 11, 1922, in Zilina, Slovakia, he was the son of the late Ignatz and Frances (Manga) Urbanec.

Steve joined the Navy in 1940 after his graduation from Lincoln High School. He was an aerographers mate in the Navy's weather service aboard the USS Brownson in 1946, when he participated in the mapping and charting of islands in Antarctica. He had served in the Navy throughout World War II, and continued to serve until 1948. He then enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating in 1952. He married his beautiful bride, Irene McNeil in 1950, in Manitowoc. Steve went back to work for the government and spent 27 years in the Central Intelligence Agency before retiring in 1979. He loved spending time with family and friends, golfing, bowling, fishing and enjoyed living at his cottage.

Steve was preceded in death by his loving wife, Irene, in 2007. He is survived by his six children, Stephen Urbanec, Jr. of Arlington Heights, Ill.; Michael and Darlene Urbanec of Mansfield, La.; Patricia and Rob Fly of Tenino, Wash.; Robert Urbanec of Newton, Wis.; Jeannine and Scott Schubr of Newton, Wis,; and John and Kelly Urbanec of Cleveland, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Tad Urbanec, Robert Fly, Michael Fly, Elizabeth Fly, Marguerite Urbanec, James Urbanec, Christopher Urbanec and Melissa Urbanec; three great-grandchildren; special nieces, Michele, Margie and Theresa, special nephew, James; and many other loving nieces, nephews and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ann Patrick; and infant brother, Josef.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
