A Sorrowful Death

J.H. Barrier of Reece, one of the most promising and influential business young men of the county, and highly respected by all who knew him, shot himself with a revolver last Wednesday morning about three o'clock causing instant death. The deceased had been confined to his bed about ten days by a severe attack bilious or remitted fever and for a time was considered dangerously ill. About two o'clock on the morning of his tragic death, he prevaled upon his brother J.L., to go home and get some rest, and resting easily, Joe at last yeilded to his brother's urgent persussions and went home, a short distance in the country, leaving his wife and his wife's mother, Mrs. A.G. Everett. Mrs. Everett retired to bed in an adjoining room while the tired wife laid herself down to rest beside her husband. She fell into a sleep, and while thus sleeping her husband arose from his sick bed, and so quietly that he did not awaken her went to his trunk, got his loaded revolver and passing out into the kitchen, placed the muzzle of the loaded revolver to his forehead and fired the fatal shot that robbed a young wife of a kind and devoted husband and caused grief and sadness to come to a large circle of loving relatives and devoted friends, The report of the pistol awoke his wife and mother, but they of course reached him only to find him dead.

Beyond all question the mind of the deceased was deranged, as no other cause is known to exist for the act. The business affairs were in a prosperous condition, and his domastic relations were of the very happiest. The blow falls upon his widow, coming as it did almost in the noneymoon of their married life, with a crusing force, while his parents and brothers and sisters were almost heartbroken over the thus sad ending of a bright and promising young life. The deep and heartfelt sympathy of all is with the bereaved ones in their most sorrowful affiction.

Coroner Pierce viewed the body and makes the following statement: From the facts, as elicted from the statements made by those who knew them, there is no doubt that J.H. Barrier's death was caused by a revolver shot, and by his own hand, while in a temporary aberration of mind, due to his debilited condiition, which was caused by sickness and of which he was at the time suffering.

From Eureka, Kansas Herald 26 August 1887 page 1.

Julian Helffenstein was born August 29, 1857, in Lexington, North Caroline the son of Henry Barrier, Jr. and Phrany Clodfelter Barrier.

He married Arista Everett May 12, 1886.
