Biography

George Franklin Brodie died peacefully early Friday morning as a result of complications from cancer surgery. His wife, Meriel Brodie, and his sister-in-law, Juliana Richardson, were at his side.

George was born April 13th, 1944 in Carlsbad, New Mexico to Col. George Fontaine Brodie, Jr. and Norma Jean Wortman Brodie. As an Air Force brat, he lived throughout the U.S. as he grew up. He graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1962 and attended Duke University. After Duke, he entered the Army in 1967 and served honorably in South Korea and the Panama Canal Zone. After discharge, he attended Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, where he met and married Meriel Newcomb. After they graduated in 1973 they made Raleigh, N.C. their home.

George worked in retail management until 1981 when he joined the staff of Governor James B. Hunt in the Office of Citizen Affairs. After this, his activities became limited by bouts of illness.

His wife wishes to thank Dr. Richard Weisler for the continuing care he gave George. Despite this he was extremely active as a parishioner of Sacred Heart Cathedral, serving at various times as RCIA Instructor, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Mass Coordinator, and on the Parish Council and AAMEN Chapter. He was a member of the Knights of St. Peter Claver and was presented with the St. Monica Award in August, 2008 for his service to his church and the community.

George is survived by his beloved wife, Meriel Newcomb Brodie, by his uncles Robert Brodie, John "Bud" and Rosemary Wortman, Robert and Jean Wortman, and by his distant cousin Thomas Strickland. He is also survived by his wife's six brothers and sisters, his eight nieces and nephews who were very special to him, as well as the many friends who enriched his life.

A visitation will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's St., on Tuesday, November 8th, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. The Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, November 9th, at Sacred Heart Cathedral at 10:00 AM, followed by burial with military honors at Oakwood Cemetery
