Arbutus Dorothy Rowley, née Williamson – known to many as Beauty or Grandma Bea – left us to be with the Lord on Monday, October 9, 2017, at age 84.
Born on July 16, 1933 to Fred and Lena Williamson, Arbutus began her life during the Great Depression and WWII in Chicago, IL. When she was a child, she was often called on to assist her teachers and balanced her schooling with helping her mother take care of her younger sisters. As a young woman before marriage, Arbutus worked as a cashier at Keester's Grocery in Chicago, IL, a department store clerk, a phone operator, and a bank teller in Belleville, IL.
She married Kenneth J. Rowley on June 26, 1954 in Belleville, IL, and they began a life together that would take them across the globe, grant them seven children and nine grandchildren, and create a wealth of memories. The Air Force sent them to Japan, Italy, and Alaska – and many places in between. In the summer of 1969, Arbutus and her family made the long trip by car from Anchorage, AK to their final home here in San Antonio, TX. After Kenneth's passing in 1988, she dedicated much of her time to her grandchildren and to her church community. At Pearsall Road Baptist Church she was an esteemed member of the Berean Ladies Class, and served as both an Assistant Treasurer and Trustee. After many years of tenaciously fighting chronic illness, she passed peacefully surrounded by her daughters and granddaughters.
Arbutus is survived by six children, nine grandchildren, one sister, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Lena Williamson, brother Wesley Williamson, sister Joyce Muir, husband Kenneth J. Rowley and eldest daughter Catherine Rowley.
She will be missed.
