OBITUARY
"James Thomas DeCarlo, Sr., a life-long Stamford resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, to join the love of his life and soulmate, Philomena "Phyl" Grimaldi DeCarlo in eternity.
Born at home, on Dean Street (which Jim always said was "the best street in Stamford"), December 5, 1921 to Joseph and Victoria (Ethel) DeCarlo, he was one of eight children including his brothers Joseph DeCarlo and Tony Altamuro. He was predeceased by his brothers Frank and Nicholas DeCarlo, Felix Altamuro and sisters Catherine Marabella and Mary Koenig.
On November 23, 1941, Jim married Phyl who came from Bronx, NY. They were married for 65 years up until the time of her death in 2006. He is survived by their four children, six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. [The names are redacted for privacy.]
In 1943, Jim was drafted into the Army, where he served proudly in WWII in England, France, Belgium and Germany and was honorably discharged in 1945.
In 1951, Jim along with his brothers, Frank, Joe, Tony and Felix, built his beautiful home on Shippan Avenue in Stamford where he enjoyed his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granddaughter.
In 1977, Jim accomplished a life-long dream. He received his high school diploma! With the onset of the Great Depression and having lost his father at the tender age of 3, Jim had to drop out of high school to help his mother and grandmother with the household income.
In 1983, Jim retired after 43 years from the New Haven/Hartford Railroad (now Metro North) where he climbed the ranks from car cleaner to machinist to foreman.
Jim was a life-long member at St. Mary's RC Church in Stamford where he was baptized and confirmed. He was past President of St. Mary's Parish Council, served as a Eucharistic Minister and led St. Mary's Prayer Group for more than 25 years with his late wife Phyl.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's R.C. Church, Stamford. Burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Darien. Friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford, Friday, October 13, 2017 4 to 8 p.m.
