Carl C. Deeds, former Amherst Council member

Carl C. Deeds, former Amherst School Board and City Council member, died at Ohio Extended Care Center after a long illness Sunday, one week following his 88th birthday.

Marion L. Steele High School and Powers Elementary School was built during his 12 year tenure on the Amherst School Board. Mr. Deeds served one term as councilman-at-large on Amherst City Council.

Born in Lancaster, he lived in Lorain County since 1936.

A 1929 Lancaster High School graduate, Mr. Deeds earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture in 1932 from Ohio State University where he played on the varsity soccer team.

He taught vocational agriculture at Kipton and Brighton schools for two years, then in 1938 moved to Amherst where he continued teaching. Mr. Deeds retired in 1970 as a distribution education teacher at Elyria High School.

He served eight years as Lorain County Agricultural Extension agent and was a long time member of the Amherst Hospital Board of Directors.

He also belonged to St. peter United Church of Christ, Amherst, Lorain Senior Fellowship and the Lorain County and Ohio Retired teachers association.

Among his many activities were gardening, bowling, fishing, golf and playing bridge.

Survivors include his wife, Dolly S. (nee Spangler), to whom he was married 63 years; a son, David C. of Houston; two grandchildren; brothers, Walter A., Lewis, William R., Phillip A., George R. and Charles H., all of Lancaster; and a sister, Anne M. of Lancaster.

Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. E. William Mathews officiating.

Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial park, Amherst Township.

Memorial may be made to the church or to Amherst Public Library.
