He was a younger son of Charles Archibald Cospatrick Douglas-Home, K.T., 13th Earl of Home, and his wife, Lilian, Countess of Home, of Coldstream, Berwickshire, Scotland. His elder brother was Alexander Frederick Douglas-Home, more commonly known as Alec, who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from October 1963 to October 1964.
