Gary S. Barnhard

Lexington, SC - Born March 29, 1955 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Mary Barnhard, (nee Varacky) and the late Robert Barnhard. "End of Watch" came for Gary on October 12, 2017 when he lost a valiant struggle with cancer.

A proud retired Police Officer, Gary served with Law Enforcement agencies in Ohio and several in SC beginning in the early 80's. His passion for motorcycles was shared by his loving wife, Donna. At the time of his passing, he was an active member of the Blue Knights SC1 Law Enforcement Motorcycle club and previously was a member in Ohio. Gary loved his family and was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his daughter, Jennifer and son, Kenny. In addition to receiving numerous commendations, citations and letters of appreciation throughout his Law Enforcement career, Gary received the State of South Carolina Law Enforcement Medal of Honor for his role in the resolution of a hostage situation in which he placed himself directly in the line of gunfire to rescue several gunshot victims. Gary was also selected to stand Honor Guard at the South Carolina State Capital for the funeral of Senator Strom Thurmond while he lay in state and the recovery and return of the H. L. Hunley submarine in Charleston, SC.

Surviving Gary are his loving wife: Donna Sue Barnhard (nee Nagy); daughter: Jennifer Sue Barnhard; son: Kenneth Steven Barnhard; mother-in-law: Helen A. Nagy (nee Milik), his faithful K-9 companions: Sophie, Murphy and Sammie; and numerous other family members in SC, OH and TN.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 in the Lexington Chapel of the Caughman-Harman Funeral Home at 1:30 PM. The family will begin receiving friends at 12 noon. A short memorial ride to the El Paso Restaurant in Lexington to Honor Gary will follow. All are welcome to participate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gary's honor to the Hospitality House of Charlotte, Compassionate Care Hospice or an Animal Shelter of ones' choice. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home - Lexington Chapel, Lexington, SC assisted the family with arrangements.
