Richard "Dick" George Frailing, age 85, passed away on Friday, April 8, 2011, in Virginia Beach, Va. He leaves behind loving family, friends and a legacy of achievements.

Dick was born in Appleton, Wis., on Feb. 18, 1926, to Arwin and Hildegard Westphal Frailing. He grew up as part of a large family of seven brothers and sisters: Dick, twin brother Robert, Gerald, William, Thomas, Michael and Marilyn. After attending Appleton High School, he attended Lawrence University where he held several track and field records. Dick then settled in Brillion, Wis., with his beautiful bride, Margaret. Dick taught math and art at Lincoln High School in Manitowoc, as well as coaching both track and football. As wrestling coach he led his teams to a career record of 193-48-1, and earned induction into the Wisconsin Wrestling Hall of Fame. Through his years of teaching and coaching and as director of a summer work camp in Mecan River, Wis., Dick taught, coached and mentored thousands of young people to believe in themselves and to strive to reach their goals. Through his love of God he was a dedicated member of the congregation of First Lutheran Church in Manitowoc. Dick held positions as Deacon, Sunday school teacher, as well as a long-time volunteer at Holy Family Hospital. He will always be remembered for his love of his family, love of God, and his humor and dedication to his community, students, and athletes.

He is survived by a large and loving family: his wife of 63 years: Margaret Adela Anna Frailing; daughter: Dianne F. Banker, and spouse, Robert Banker, of Warrenton, Va.; sons: Richard W. Frailing of Virginia Beach, Va., and Victor Frailing and spouse, Lynne Frailing of Chesapeake, Va.; grandchildren: Robert and Eric Banker, Suzanne Saltisiak, Lisa Randles, Kathleen Michalski, Andree Frailing, Sayward Meinke, Aaron and Richard Frailing; great-grandchildren: Madelyn and Charlotte Banker, Jayna and Logan Saltisiak and Lily Michalski, with two more great-grandchildren on the way; brothers: Gerald, William, Thomas, and Michael Frailing; and sister: Marilyn Kunstman. He is predeceased by his mother, father, and twin brother, Robert.

For his grandchildren, he was always a kind lap to sit on, source of jelly-beans or giver of the dreaded but loved "whisker rub". For his wrestlers, he will always be remembered for the "suggestion" to "Go for the legs!"

Dick would like to be remembered with the words "He was a good sport." His remarkable passion for life will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held Sat., April 16, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Church of the Good Shepard, 1489 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, Va. The memorial service will be at 2 p.m., and a reception at Good Shepard will follow. Memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA.
