Barbara S. Wirtjes of Tremont passed away at 9:18PM Wednesday, October 18 in her home surrounded by her family. Barb was born September 27, 1946 in Delavan to Ira and Matra (Overstreet) Wethington. She married Wayne Wirtjes on May 20, 1967 in Pekin, IL. They were married for 38 years until Wayne's death in 2005.
Surviving are her two sons Scott Wirtjes of Bloomington and Todd Wirtjes of Tremont; two step sons, Rory (Becky) Wirtjes of Colorado Springs, CO and Rusty Wirtjes of Chico, California. Barb has 4 grandsons and 4 granddaughters. Also surviving are two brothers, Marshall Wethington of Monticello, Kentucky and Michael (Jeri) Wethington of Stillman Valley, IL; one sister, Shirley (Bob) Welborn of Pekin.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Wethington in 1955.
Barbara was a hard-working, independent and driven woman with an incredible work ethic. She worked and went to college while raising her children. Her career included positions at The American Distillery in Pekin in the early 70's, and The Hopedale Medical Complex throughout the 80's and 90's serving in a variety of roles including hospital and nursing home administrator. Barb survived two bouts of cancer over the past six years. While fighting cancer the past couple months, effects of dementia progressed rapidly. She continued to own and operate the 121 Club in Tremont up until her death.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 am Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at Davis-Oswald Funeral Home in Tremont. Pastor Noah Lee will officiate. Burial will follow at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Friends and family are encouraged to join the family for a celebration of life at the 121 Club following Wednesday's services.
