He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1950, and was in the US Air Force from 1950 to 1954, during which time he served in the Korean War. After leaving the Air Force he worked briefly with Minneapolis Honeywell, then in 1956 he began a career at Crocker National Bank in San Francisco. It was there that he met his wife of 59 years, Margaret Babb Grant. Shortly after getting married Steve and Maggie moved to Redding, California, where their family enjoyed many outdoor recreational activities including boating on Whiskeytown Lake and Shasta Lake, and going on weekend hikes. The family moved to Sacramento in 1973 where Steve enjoyed a long, successful career as a financial planner.
He was active in several local organizations including Rotary Club, Toastmasters, and SCORE. He also tutored local high school students in reading.
He is survived by his wife, and his three children, Kathryn Gugeler of Sacramento, Eleanor Millar of Colusa, and James Young of Boston. He is also survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were private. He will be interned at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the .
