George Paul Gerhardt, 75, of Mercer, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, at his residence after a brief illness.
A son of George and Hilda Gerhardt, he was born in Pittsburgh on Jan. 18, 1942.
George graduated from Bellevue High School in 1959 and the Pennsylvania Police Academy, Hershey, in 1964.
He served in the U. S. Army Reserves from 1960-65.
After serving with the state police in eastern Pennsylvania for four years, he moved to Mercer, retiring from the state police in 1993.
George was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Mercer, where he served as a former elder and deacon and secretary of the church foundation board of directors.
He was also a former member of Mercer Area School Board and Mercer Area Library Board; former member and past president and assistant district governor of Mercer Rotary Club; and member of Hebron Lodge 575 F & AM and Brady Paul Lodge of Fraternal Order of Police in Butler.
George is survived by: his wife, Janice, at the residence; two daughters, Suzie, wife of Mark Guiler, in Mercer, and Margy Gerhardt, wife of Gregg Blum, in New Castle; two grandsons, Nick and Nate Guiler in Mercer; and a sister, Nancy, wife of Michael Dukes, in Stanley, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
