Missouri Governor. Educated at Harvard University, he was successful in the funeral industry and was owner-president of the St. Louis Coffin Company. In 1916, he was elected as a Democratic the 34th Governor of Missouri, serving until 1921. During his term, a harvest road bill was sanctioned, a state park system was initiated, women were granted the right to vote, the state tax commission was created, construction on the new state capitol in Jefferson City was finalized and new tax laws were enacted. After leaving office he resumed his previous business interests. He died from a jaw infection at the age of 64.
