Helmer entered the United States Marine Corps on July 22, 1954 in Milwaukee. He then re-enlisted in 1956 and then again in 1968. He received the rank of Master Sergeant and was honorably discharged on April 8, 1974. Helmer then served 10 years in the Marine Corps Reserves. During his military service, Helmer received the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal with four stars, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and Frame, the Vietnamese Service Medal with five bronze stars, Pistol Expert Badge, the Letter of Appreciation Combat Action Ribbon, the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, Civil Action Color 1st Class with Palm and Frame, and the Presidential Unit Citation. After his military service, Helmer was an accountant in many capacities, including his owning his own tax service. Helmer was a member of the AMVETS.
He enjoyed singing karaoke and people knew him across the United States as the "Karaoke Kowboy."
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Furo-DeMeyer of Stevens Point; children, Jeff, Lance, Lavonne, Kevin, Kirk, and Randy; many grandchildren; brother, Leslie; sisters, Gloria, Marion, and Winnie.
A committal service will be held March 30, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the main chapel at the Veterans Home in King. Inurnment will be at the Veterans Cemetery at King.
