GAIL ELIZABETH VORBACH

September 7, 1959 - September 6, 2015

Coxsackie, NY

After years of inspiring so many with her energy, enthusiasm, and love of life, Gail Elizabeth Vorbach of Coxsackie, NY, formerly of Westchester and Orange Counties, NY, died Sunday, September 6, 2015 at the Jack D. Weiler Hospital, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY.

A truly loving and devoted daughter, sister, niece, cousin, aunt, friend, and wife, Gail was the daughter of Joan Bouton Vorbach of Middletown, NY and Joseph Vorbach, now of McAllen, TX with his wife, Renee and daughters, Cassie Vose and husband, Erik, of Modesto, CA, and Vanna Vorbach, of Edinburg, TX.

Gail was a graduate of Minisink Valley High School, SUNY Orange Community College, and SUNY New Paltz. She loved teaching English at the college and high school level to students who were underprivileged and underprepared and happily spent hours carefully reading every essay they wrote to provide them with the very best guidance. Over the years, she taught at SUNY New Paltz, the University of Maine at Presque Isle, ME (where she met her husband, Keith), Eastern Maine Community College in Bangor, ME, Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY, and Coxsackie-Athens High School in Coxsackie, NY.

We will always remember Gail greeting everyone on Christmas, whether in person or on the phone, by ringing a special bell she wore around her neck and gleefully saying, "Ho, Ho, Ho… Merry Christmas!" For years, Gail was a member and dedicated volunteer crew of the environmental education vessel, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, headquartered in Beacon, NY. She loved the Clearwater and its founder, legendary folk singer and activist, Pete Seeger, as well as the many volunteers who brought the sloop to life…and she loved the Hudson River, which she lived along in Coxsackie. Gail was also a member of the Coxsackie Garden Club and a member of the Volkssport Club at West Point, for which she created and organized a walking event in New Paltz.

Gail loved horses and enjoyed competing with "Johnny Jump Up" and "Gallant Boy". She also dearly loved cats and over the years she had that love returned by Kitty Doo Dah, Mama Kitty, Jazzy, Joy, Magic, Maestro, and especially Mango, her "chemo kitty". An avid reader and often prolific writer, she created works of poetry and prose with delight and edited a number of literary magazines for college and high school students. Every Sunday, she made sure she read the entire Sunday edition of the New York Times and finished every crossword puzzle.

Gail is predeceased by her uncle, Charles Vorbach, of Huntington, NY.

Among her family: her loving husband, Keith Toomey of Coxsackie, NY, his children, Amy Elizabeth, Jared, and Seth and his wife, Tara, and their children, all of Pennsylvania; Gail’s brother, Robert Vorbach, his wife, Alice, of Nashua, NH and their children, Shea and David; her brother, Barry Vorbach of Middletown, NY and his daughter, Karissa, and her son of Chicopee, MA. Also, Gail’s uncle, Brian Bouton and his wife, Maryam, of Chapel Hill, NC; Gail’s Uncle Harry Vorbach and his wife, Carmella, of Bella Vista, AR; her aunt, Elly Wayne, of Suffern, NY, and aunt, Irene, of Atlanta, GA.

Among Gail’s cousins: Linda Avellino, of Spotswood, NJ and her children; Carol Belcastro, of Norcross, GA and her children; Lorene Bossong and her husband, Edward, of Hicksville, NY and their children; Steven Bouton and his wife, Laurie, of Eugene, OR; Nancy Stocker of Sodus, NY and her son; Sharon Bouton Stone and her husband, Derrick, of Charlottesville, VA and their children; Laina Valentine and her husband, Robert, of Norcross, GA and their son, and Edward Vorbach and his wife, Denise, of Spencerport, NY and their son.

Other family include: Judy O’Malley and Judith Feher of Carmel, NY; Larry Feher of Colorado; Patricia Miller of Glen Rock, PA; Rosemary and Lou Stabile of Long Beach Island, NJ; Thomas Clayton of Tom’s River, NJ, and Karolyn Heagy of Marina Del Ray, CA.

There are too many friends to list, but we want to thank Cyndy Perlich, of Portland, OR, who hurriedly flew to New York to be with us and comfort Gail as she finally found rest.

Gail’s wishes were to be cremated and be remembered by a celebration of her life, to be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Gail would appreciate donations to either cancer research at Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10065; or to Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, 724 Wolcott Ave., Beacon, NY 12508.
