Arkansas Governor. Educated by private tutors, he migrated to Arkansas, in 1820 and formed a surveying company in the city of Little Rock. He also purchased a large cotton plantation and served as surveyor-general of the Arkansas Territory, (1832-36). When Arkansas was admitted to statehood, he was elected as a Democrat the 1st Arkansas Governor, serving (1836-40). During his time in office, he endorsed legislation that initiated a banking system, urged a stronger state militia to protect the western border from Indians and was a proponent of better schools and roads. After his term, he returned to his cotton plantation until his death at age 58. His older brother Henry H. Conway was a U.S. Congressman and his younger brother Elias H. Conway was the 5th Arkansas Governor.
