Idaho Attorney-General Robert Ailshie Succumbs

Doctor Blames Heart Attack; Services Today

Robert Ailshie, attorney-general of Idaho, died Sunday. He was 39. An attending physician said death was caused by a heart attack.
A week ago his mother, Mrs. Lucie Bundren Ailshie, died of a heart attack. Both deaths occurred in the family home at 219 East Jefferson street.
The attorney-general was found dead at 1:50 p.m. by his brother, William, a member of the diplomatic service in Oslo, Norway, who was called home by his mother's death.
Services will be held at the family home at 3:30 p. m. today. Dean Herald Gardner of the Episcopal church will officiate.
Third Visit by Death
It was the third death in the Ailshie family in recent months. Ailshie's father, James F. Ailshie, supreme court justice, died May 27. Another son, James F. Ailshie, Jr., died several years ago.
Present in the Ailshie home when the attorney-general's death was discovered were, in addition to the brother, a sister, Mrs. Lucille K. McHarg, Pueblo, Colo:, and Charles K. McHarg, Jr., and his wife, of Gooding.
Governor Passes Tribute
Gov. C. A. Robins said, "Robert's death came as a shock to all of us. Bob was one of my most loyal friends. I just can't realize he is gone."
Statehouse offices will be closed today. The flag will be flown at half-mast.
Robert Ailshie was not married.
He was born in Idaho, and was educated in the public schools of Couer d'Alene. He took his pre-legal work at the University of Idaho, and studied law at the Harvard law school.
In 1933, the late attorney-general was admitted to the bar and began practicing in association with his father in Couer d'Alene.
Later he moved to Boise where he practiced in association with his late brother, James, and Kenneth O'Leary. He also practiced law as an associate counsel in the

Bar Association Leader
Since his admission to the bar, Robert Ailshie had been active in legal and political circles. In 1934 he was Idaho's first chairman of the American Bar association's junior section.
For the past three years, he was on the legislative committee of the American Bar association.
Defense Coordinator
Gov. Chase Clark appointed him assistant state coordinator of civilian defense in February of 1942, and Gov. C. A. Bottolfsen appoint-ed him executive secretary of the civilian defense council in January, 1943. He had been rejected for service with the armed forces.
Robert Ailshie resigned this position in December, 1943, after submitting a report to the governor recommending a cut in civilian defense expenditures and abolishment of the office of executive secretary.
He resumed the practice of law in Boise then, and on March 22, 1946, announced his candidacy for Republican nomination as attorney-general. He was nominated and won the election.
Previously, In 1942 and in 1944, Robert Ailshie had been nominated by the Republicans for attorney-general but defeated in the general election.
Pallbearers Named
Pallbearers at services today will be Willis Sullivan, James McDevitt, Max Eiden, Torn McCorkle, Ernest Milliner and John Rothschild, all of Boise. Honorary pallbearers will be Governor Robins, Supreme Court Chief Justice Alfred Budge, Lt, Gov. Donald A. Whitehead, Secretary of State J. D. (Cy) Price, Assistant Attorney-General J. R. Smead and Kenneth Barclay of Jerome.
