IRON RIVER -- Benny Lyle Brickman of Iron River passed away on Monday, Oct. 23, 2017 while working in the woods doing what he loved.
He was born Dec. 21, 1937 in Tama, Iowa, the son of the late William and Fern Abigail (Mayo) Brickman. He grew up and attended school in Iowa, then moved to the Wisconsin areas of Ojibwa and Winter.
He was a second generation logger with more than 68 years of experience. He began logging when he was 14 years old, using a team of horses working in the woods with his father.
Benny was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian. He was a very devout Catholic and was very proud of the fact that he was a convert to the Catholic faith.
He was united in marriage to his beautiful wife Larraine Tart (Miss America, as he always called her) in Mellen, Wis. on Sept. 27, 1958. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.
His greatest passions were his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his religion and logging. He loved to spend time talking about the Lord to everyone he encountered.
Benny worked in the woods with his boys up until the day he died. He was hoping this is how it would happen.
Our Brickman family is of the woods. Our grandparents worked that pulp and we all as a result have a little pine sap running through our veins. Some of us have heard the stories passed on. So next time you’re in the woods, or come across a fine old white pine or oak standing sentinel-take in the view and send a “hello” up to those old bulls of the woods, with names like Polecat and Frenchie, and know that we are sitting and telling stories around the woodpile in the sky with me.
He is survived by his loving wife Larraine Brickman of Crystal Falls; a daughter Sharon Miland (her fiancé Gerald Mervar); sons, Michael Brickman (Karla) and Matthew Brickman (Theresa Nordstrom); a daughter-in-law Annette (Brickman) Church.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law Bernice (Tart) Baker; brothers, Billy (Pat) Brickman, Ed (Darlene) Brickman, Roger (Mae) Brickman; four sisters, Erma (Tom) Griffin, Verna Koepp, Barbara Reed and Bea (John) Jefferson.
Also surviving are his grandchildren: Mark’s children Tina and DJ Hren and her brother Marko Brickman; and Sharon’s children, Gina and Mark Luttrell, Kyle, Amanda and Brittany Miland; great-grandchildren, Davie and Jensen Hren, Trenton Ackerman, Jax and Eva Miland; and many nieces and nephews.
Benny was preceded in death by two children, his daughter Batina Brickman and his son Mark Brickman.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3 at the Nash Funeral Home of Crystal Falls.
The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 4 at St. Cecilia Church in Caspian.
Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River, with a private burial at a later time.
The family has entrusted the Nash Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Crystal Falls with the arrangements.
