John E. Knapp, of Rhinelander, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, at his home. He was 74 years old.

He was born May 2, 1943, in Antigo, a son of Edward and Bernice (Nelson) Knapp. He married Shirley Bierman on Aug. 2, 1975 at Peace Lutheran church in Antigo. She preceded him in death in 2006.

He graduated from Antigo High School with the class of 1961.

He was raised in Antigo where he was active with the Boy Scouts of America having served as a Scout Master.

On July 23, 1964 he entered the United States Army and served in Viet Nam until discharge on July 14, 1966. After service in active duty he served in the Army Reserves.

Mr. Knapp worked for the United States Postal Service in Antigo for 28 years. He retired in May of 1998.

In retirement he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, riding his Harley- Davidson and spending time with family.

Survivors include two daughters, Cindy (Randy) Engelhardt of Clintonville, Royola (David) Wenz, Florida; a son, John (Beth) Knapp, Rhinelander; four grandchildren Craig Engelhardt, Nicole Koenig, Trevor and Emma Knapp; a sister, Doris (John) Larsen of Weston; a brother, Tom (Paula) Knapp of Fulsom, Louisiana.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson in infancy, Jeffery Engelhardt.



Burial with military honors will take place in Elmwood Cemetery.
