Son of Jacob Barney and Elizabeth Pickering, and husband of Sarah E. Hyde.

Marcus S. Barney, locomotive engineer on C.R.I.&P.R.R., came to Chicago in the spring of 1854 with his parents. He was born in Rochester, NY Dec 14 1841, where his parents lived 5 years; thence moved to Niagara Falls, where they lived 8 years, then coming to Chicago. When Mr. Barney was 21 years old, he began learning the trade of machinist and engineer. He began running locomotive in 1862. In 1870 he was m. to Miss Sarah E. Hyde, of Des Moines, IA. they have 3 children - Mary E., John J., and Marcus S. Mr. Barney is a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Marcus S. Barney one of the oldest Uve engineers on the C.R.I.&P.R.R. Road died at his residence in Blue Island Friday morning of Bright's disease of the kidneys. Mr. Barney was born at Rochester N.Y. His father, the late Jacob Barney, came to Chicago when Marcus was I8 years of age and was until the time of his death master mechanic of the Rock Island 1W L. Marcus attended the Jones School and the Chicago High School. He early developed a taste for machinery and railroading and a short time before be became of age he had charge of one of the local switch engines. During his life he ran a ? engine on- all the branches of the Rock Island Road and serted on the Union Pacific as far west tu Chyrflia For the last ten years hehad run one of the dummy locomotives. Superintendent Chamberlain of the Rock Island Road has placed a special train at the disposal of attendees which will be drawn by Jlr. Barney old ennn No. 19. The train will leave this Van Buren street depot today for Blue Island and after the funeral service the same train will take the remains and the friends and mourners via the Rock Island and Illinois Central Roads to OakwoodsCemetery (August 17, 1884, Chicago Tribune from Chicago, Illinois · Page 7)

Mark was admitted by card to Locomotive Engineers Brotherhood 12 May 1876, south Chicago

His sister, Jennie Putnam is also buried in Oakwoods Cemetery (#185026545), and Cornelia Francis (#185034558) is buried in Forest Home Cemetery.
