Civil War Confederate Army Officer. A student at the University of Virginia when the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the Virginia State Army soon after the firing on Fort Sumter. He was then transferred to staff duty under General John Bowen. After the surrender of Vicksburg, he was exchanged and transferred back to Virginia where he served in the Army of Northern Virginia with the rank of Major, PACS. After the war, he became a businessman in St. Louis, first as a steamboat agent, then in real estate and insurance.
