Alfred Delno Walsh, age 87, of 138 Waters Road, Laurel Bloomery, Tn., passed away Sat., March 06, 2004. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roby Filmore and Rada Greenwell Walsh; one brother, Odell Walsh and two sisters, Frances Jones and Pearl Wilson. Alfred was born January 01, 1917 in Shady Valley, Tn. where he spent most of his childhood before moving to Bristol, Tn. The family moved back to Johnson County where Alfred graduated from Johnson County High School, Mountain City, Tn. in 1937. He left Johnson County to work at Kingsport Press, Kingsport, Tn., where he was employed until he entered the United States Army in 1942. During World War II, Alfred served in the 972nd Signal Corps Battalion for over three years. Most of this time was spent in the Pacific Theater of War. He returned to Kingsport, Tn. in 1945 and began work for the Press. Alfred married Maxine Leffman of Johnson County and they resided in Kingsport for the next 42 years. He and his wife returned to Johnson County where he was residing until the time of his death.
Alfred was a current member of St. John's United Methodist Church of Laurel Bloomery, Tn. For many years, he was a member of Clinton Presbyterian Church of Mountain City, Tn. where he served as Deacon and Elder. Alfred was a member of Post 0003, American Legion of Kingsport, Tn. for 50 years.
Alfred is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maxine Leffman Walsh of the home; one son, James Lawrence Walsh and wife Patricia of Kingsport; two brothers, Arvel Walsh and Harry Walsh; one sister, Peggy Walsh, all of Kingsport and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Alfred Delno Walsh will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004 from the Chapel of the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home, Mountain City, Tn., with Rev. Steve McCrady and Rev. Harold Hudson to officiate. Military Graveside Services will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, Va. and will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be nephews John Muse, Morris Bury, Michael Chatterton, Joe Walsh, Milton Carter, Rick Lewis, Rick Stewart and David Rash. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wayne Porter, Eric Taylor, Sam Taylor, Kenny Icenhour, Wallace Gentry, Dean Maxwell, Bob Reece and the Johnson County Honor Guard.
