She graduated from Leavenworth High School in Waterbury. She was affectionately called "Sister" or "Auntie Sister" by her family. Ms. Cooke joined Grace Baptist as a child and never missed a Sunday until she became ill. She enjoyed working in the Grace Baptist kitchen. Ms. Cooke loved to play bingo and go to the Casino. She was also a seamstress. In her early years, she worked at a Chinese Restaurant in New York City. She worked at Cherry Street Grocer, the family business, where she made the best grinders. Later she was employed at Devon Manufacture until her retirement. Ms. Cooke enjoyed baking pies and cakes, also, cooking, especially collard greens, pigs' feet and chitterlings. Sister was a strong-willed person and would "tell it like it is." She was very outspoken. Sister had a big heart and loved her family.
