U.S. Congressman. Moving to Iowa, in 1852, during the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company K, 4th Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Union Army, (1862-64). After the war, he was recorder of Taylor County, Iowa, (1869-70), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1870 and commenced to practice law in Bedford, Iowa. He was a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives, (1878-79) and district attorney of the third judicial district of Iowa, (1880-86). In 1889, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first and Fifty-second Congresses, serving until 1893. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 83.
