George was the son of George W. & Martha J. (Knox) Russell. He studied at Bangor Theological Seminary, Maine. He was a noted cornetist, and music teacher. He also had an excellent singing voice and it was worth going to church just to hear him sing the hymns. Both he and his wife were cosmopolitan people, but both loved country people and had a special way of making each one of us feel very much worthwhile. As pastor he was full of ideas for the improvement of the church and community and provoked such confidence in everyone that they gladly followed his leadership.

Rev. Russell was received into the First Baptist Church of Starksboro VT 6 Jun 1896 from Randall Free Memorial Church of Somerville MA. Ordination was requested 5 Sep 1896. He resigned 3 Mar 1900 but this was laid on the table for one month with no further mention in the minutes. He was dismissed 5 Jul 1903.
