After marrying Alex H. Sands, they went on a boat trip to Williamsburg, Va. where Alex had been born. There is a letter written to her mother, in which she describes the old colonial town as she views it on her honeymoon trip. That letter is now in the collection of the Peachy Library at Colonial Williamsburg and is one of the only written descriptions of what Williamsburg was like before the Civil War.

Ella and Alex. H. Sands had 13 children.

She died at the home of her son, Tucker Sands.
