In his youth, Herman was a page in the U.S. Congress (House of Representatives). Herman married Freda McArthur (the daughter of James Peter McArthur and Minnie Mayhew) on May 25, 1918 at Louisville, Kentucky. Although his widow's application for a military head stone states that he served in the Army Air Corps as a 2nd Lieut. from 1917-19, his marriage record states that he was serving in an infantry unit stationed at Camp Gordon, Georgia. Continuing the legacy of his father and grandfather, he worked for newspapers for most of his adult life. He was for many years a journalist for the 'Windsor (Ontario Canada) Star', living at Windsor for a number of years. Moving his family to Iowa, from 1937 to 1941 he was editor and publisher of a small weekly newspaper at Riverside (Washington Co. ) Iowa. He and his family then moved to the Detroit, Michigan area where he was editor of the feature page of the 'Detroit Free Press'
