Frederick John “Fritz” Barnard, 100, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2017 at William Newton Hospital in Winfield, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. on Friday, November 17, 2017 at Grace Episcopal Church in Winfield. Private graveside services will follow. Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 16 from 3-6 P.M. at the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield. Memorials in Fritz’s name may be made out to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Cowley County Humane Society and may be left in the care of the funeral home.

Fritz was born July 7, 1917 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Lewellyn Barnard and Amelia Sarah (Marz) Barnard. Fritz attended high school at St. Thomas Catholic School and later attended Eastern Michigan University. Fritz was united in marriage to Adelaide Baden in August of 1943 in Winfield, Kansas. He was an Army Air Force flight instructor during WW II and continued on with his love for planes by selling aircraft for Fairchild Aviation. He later opened Barnard’s Appliance in Winfield, which he operated for over 25 years. Fritz enjoyed chess and crossword puzzles, traveling, flying, and sailing with the Santa Fe Sailing Club. He religiously attended his coffee group, and was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. Most of all, Fritz loved spending time with his family and friends.

Fritz is survived by his wife Adelaide, son Martin Frederick, and daughter-in-law Terri of Wichita.
