Charles F. Allen, 96, of Georgetown went to be with his Lord on November 13, 2017, at VA Illiana Health Care, Danville. He was born in Indianola, Illinois on April 22, 1921 to Homer O. and Collista J. Allen. He married Marilyn Grace Humrichous October 27, 1946, until her passing on September 28, 2004.
He is survived by his daughter, Paula and Stan Boelman, who have been on the mission field for many years in England. He is also survived by two grandsons, Jonathan and Timothy, and one sister, Helen of Arizona. He also has several living nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Lucille, and a son, Norman.
Charles graduated from Indianola High School and served in World War II in the Army Air Corps for over 3 years as a B17 bomber waist gunner. He received an honorable discharge as a Technical Sergeant. He also was an American POW in Germany for 15 months and was forced to march 90 days and walk 600 miles.
Charles graduated from Pillsbury Bible College in Owatonna, Minnesota with a B.A. degree with majors in Bible and Pastorology and a minor in general education. He pastored churches in Illinois, Missouri and Kansas and was in Christian education in Arizona and was also interested in missions. He taught Bible at Midwest Bible College in Danville, Illinois, was a life member of National American Ex-Prisoners of Wars organization, life member of V.F.W. and a member of the American Legion Dornblaser Post 203, Georgetown, Illinois.
As hobbies, he liked to play basketball, softball, tennis, ping pong and fishing. He summarizes his life under the theme: "A prisoner of war is liberated twice." In April of 1945, he found himself in a P.O.W. camp in Germany. Tired, dirty, starving and ready to give up, he cried out to God in desperation. "God get me out of this mess and I'll do anything for you." At this time, he was not a Christian. On May 4, 1945, he was liberated by British forces. Six years after his discharge from the Air Corps he came to realize that he was a sinner and that he needed to be saved. In his own words he said, "In simple faith, I admitted that I was a sinner, that Jesus Christ died on the cross, that He was buried and rose again the third day for my sake. This was the most significant event in my life. After all these years, I have peace and joy that only Jesus can give. I was liberated from the Germans and I was liberated from my sin. Jesus has set me free. He can do the same for you."
A celebration of Charles' life will be held at 12:00pm, Monday, November 20, 2017, at Sunset's Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home, 200 E West St, Georgetown, with Pastor Mike Roberts officiating. Visitations will be held 3:00pm to 7:00pm, Sunday, November 19, 2017 at the funeral home and 10:00am to 12:00pm on Monday prior to his service. He will be laid to rest in Danville National Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Dornblaser Post #203.
