Mr. Alston was founder and chairman of Alston's Hallmark Shops, a chain of greeting-card stores throughout the Greater Philadelphia area. He started the business in 1968 and ran it until he became ill recently.
He was born in Hammond, Ind., and reared in Swarthmore, graduating from Swarthmore High School and Widener University with bachelor's degrees in business and industrial engineering. He earned a master's degree in business administration from Temple University.
He had lived in West Chester for 37 years and previously in Springfield, Delaware County, for four years.
Mr. Alston, who served as a captain in the Army during World War II and was awarded three Purple Hearts, was a member of the Church of the Loving Shepherd in West Chester and the Masonic lodge in Media. His interests included golfing, skiing and spending time at his home in Warren, Vt.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Estelle Howley Alston; children Robert P., Sara A. Green, Virginia E., Nancy J. and Debora A. Pritchard; a brother, a sister and nine grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Church of the Loving Shepherd, West Chester. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken. The family suggests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to Church of the Loving Shepherd, 1066 S. New St., West Chester, Pa. 19382.
