Brunswick -- Margery Bailey Follansbee, a longtime Brunswick resident, died on Tuesday, June 21, 2016. She was born to Samuel R. and Helen Jackson Bailey in Amesbury, Massachusetts on April 13, 1924.
Her beloved husband of 73 years, Dudley Follansbee, preceded her in death on July 8, 2015. Together they raised four children: Laurie (Mrs. Richard Mobilio), Sallie (Mrs. Russell Dunning), Helen (Mrs. William Nicita) and Todd Jackson Follansbee, now deceased.
She was devoted to her family. At 92 she was the matriarch of a family that included 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren plus multiple nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws from New England to California. Her sister, Virginia Bailey Muniz, resides in Oakland, Maine. She was predeceased by three other siblings.
Margery attended Walnut Hill in Massachusetts and then was in the Class of 1945 at Wellesley College. She married Dudley in 1943 while he was in the Navy. They lived briefly in Staten Island, New York near where Dud was stationed and then settled in Larchmont, and later Mamaroneck, New York to raise their family. In 1980 when Dudley retired, they moved to Harpswell, Maine where they bought their dream home on the water in High Head.
Throughout her life, Margery was actively involved in community and church activities. She seemed to end up leading most every organization she joined. She was on the vestry at St. John’s Episcopal Church and later at St. Thomas’ in New York. She was a member of the lay leadership for many years at St. Paul’s in Brunswick, as well as a faithful member of their Prayer Group and Altar Guild. She was also on the Board of the Bowdoin International Summer Music Festival as her passion for music was deep. Her love of art led her to Bowdoin College Museum where she was a volunteer for years.
A continuous learner and ardent student, Margery loved nothing better than to take an art, music or literature course…unless it was to cruise the coast of Maine in their yawl Sea Folly with friends and family or hit the ski slopes at Sunday River in Bethel, Maine, where they had a ski house. Marge and Dud travelled world wide often in their 73 years together and garnered many friends abroad. She managed a busy, welcoming household. The door was always open and the table set for visitors from far and wide. Ever a good sport, she camped in the pouring rain, skied in below zero temps, navigated the waters of New York’s Long Island Sound and the Maine coast, and even tried ocean kayaking in California. She will be sorely missed.
A service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 27 Pleasant St., Brunswick at 11 A.M. Tuesday, June 28th. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be sent to the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund at PO Box 7058, Merrifield, VA.22116. Arrangements are in the care of Brackett Funeral Home in Brunswick.
