KINGSLEY, Iowa -- Douglas W. "Doug" Bollin, 81, of Kingsley died Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at Plymouth Manor in Le Mars, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kingsley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger Kurtenbach officiating. Private family graveside services will be held. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley.

Doug was born Dec. 25, 1925, in rural Quimby, Iowa, the son of E. Ray and Opal (Longwell) Bollin. He attended Quimby and Kingsley schools. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1944 to 1946.

On Feb. 22, 1947, he married Hazel Chase. He was a hard worker, often holding down more than one job. He worked as a farmhand for Marlin Robeson, worked for 37 years at the Kingsley Elevator, raised hogs and repaired canvas tarps. He was a meat butcher and had worked at the Kingsley Locker. After he retired in 1987, he worked as a maintenance man at Kingsley Nursing and Rehab and for the city of Kingsley on a part-time basis.

He was very handy, always coming up with creative ways of fixing things. He built two houses for his family. He enjoyed gardening and was well known in Kingsley for raising tomatoes. He also loved to play bingo with his wife and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was a member of Kingsley United Methodist Church and belonged to the American Legion Nash Post 140 of Kingsley. He was a former member of the Masonic Cosmos Lodge 470 of Kingsley and a former volunteer firefighter. For 17 years, he helped coordinate and deliver meals to elderly people within the Kingsley community. If a volunteer was unable to take the meals, he was there to cover the route.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel; a daughter, Diane Hain of Omaha; three sons and their wives, Damon and Nancy Bollin of Connelly Springs, N.C., Dennis and Patti Bollin of Le Mars, Iowa, and Danny and Audrey Bollin of Kingsley; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Maxine Fellom of Newport News, Va., and Kereen Schnee of Sioux City; two brothers, Gary Bollin of Colorado, and Jim Bollin and his wife, Penny of Green Valley, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Bollin of Anthon, Iowa, and Alice Pratt of Kingsley; a brother-in-law, Harry Chase of Tucson, Ariz.; and many other relatives and friends.
