Truman was born in Pennsylvania. Soon after his birth, the family, which included seven older siblings, headed west and settled in Indiana. His mother, Emeline Benson Strait, died there in 1846 and his father remarried in 1847 to Delight Kennicutt. There were five additional half-siblings from that marriage.

A few years after the remarriage of Truman's father, Samuel Burton Strait, the family again moved west and settled in Jordan, Minnesota, a few miles south of Shakopee. They later moved north to Shakopee. Samuel died in 1892 and Delight, Truman's stepmother, died in 1903.

Truman married Emeline Angstman in Shakopee on March 21, 1871. They had three children, Howard, Wallace, and Laura. The family moved from Shakopee to Minneapolis, where Truman worked for the Minneapolis Grain Exchange.

After Truman's death, his wife Emeline lived with their son Wallace in Minneapolis. She is buried in Lakewood Cemetery along with other Strait and Burton family members.
