John Gilman Foster, son of Austin T. who m. 1853 Stanstead Quebec, Sarah (Hurd-Gilman) Foster, was born in Derby Line, Vermont on Mar 9 1859. He received the A.B. degree from Tufts in 1880 and was admitted to the Vermont Bar a year later. On June 9, 1886, Foster married Clara Merriman and fathered three children: Katherine R. (Aikens), Austin Theophilus Foster and Stephen M. Foster. Foster was engaged in the management of trust estates and banking and became vice president of the National Bank of Derby Line and president of the Massawippi Valley Railway Company. In 1892 he was elected to the Vermont House of Representative and from then until 1894 he was a Colonel on the staff of Governor Levi K. Fuller. In 1897 Foster was appointed U.S. Consul at Halifax Nova Scotia, and six years later he became the US Consul General at Ottawa. After his retirement in 1927, he was appointed a member of the International Commission for the Advancement of Peace. Foster's vacation trip abroad in 1928 may have had something to do with the Commission appointment. John G Foster died in Fort Myers, Florida on Jan 6 1931.
