James was born on August 16, 1923 at home near Ludden, ND to James C. and Mathilda (Gocken) Johnson. At age 15, he left home to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps. In June 1944, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX, where he had Anti Air Craft Training. Jim witnessed the first atomic bomb that was set off in New Mexico and three days later was able to walk through the site. While waiting departure to Japan, the atomic bombs were dropped and his unit got called off from going overseas. After his honorable discharge in June 1945, Jim returned to the area. He married Helen Johnson of Clement, ND on July 6, 1945. They purchased a farm east of LaMoure in 1953, where they lived until 1997 when they moved into LaMoure. Helen passed away on June 29, 2016.

Jim was an active member of Zoar Lutheran Church and served as a Deacon. He was also past Commander of the American Legion. Jim was a "Jack Of All Trades", even building their A Frame House on the farm. He enjoyed wood working and sharing his carvings with his kids and handmade toys with his grandkids. He also enjoyed collecting arrowheads and while in the field Jim, could spot an arrowhead a mile away!

Survivors are his son James (Barb) Johnson; daughter LaRae (Terry) Westgard; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen and seven siblings.
