Abner Donald Scruggs, 79, of Country View Lane, Appomattox died Monday, December 4, 2017 at Appomattox Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Prince Edward County, Va., on June 4, 1938, he was a son of the late Mary Martin and Arthur Tillman Scruggs. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and a former member of the Appomattox County Rescue Squad and Oakville Ruritan Club. Abner joined the US Army after high school graduation. He served in a special unit guarding Presidential airplanes under President Dwight Eisenhower, President John F. Kennedy, and President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Abner was owner and operator of Scruggs Repair Shop and retired from Babcock & Wilcox, Lynchburg. His purpose in life was to serve and help others. His smile was contagious and touched everyone he met in some way.
He is survived by this wife, Edith Yates Scruggs; two sons, Donald Ray Scruggs and wife, Mindy of Gettysburg, Pa. and Dwayne Noel Scruggs and wife, Debbie; four grandchildren, Christopher Scruggs and Tabbie, Sarah Sikora, Curtis, C. J. Johnson and Stacey, and Aaron Scruggs: three great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at Liberty Baptist Church by Dr. Rusty Small. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday at Robinson Funeral Home from 7 until 8:30 pm and other times at residence.
