Aloys Mastel, 86, Ellendale, ND died December 5, 2017 at Prince of Peace Care Center, Ellendale surrounded by his family. He was born August 4, 1931, in rural McIntosh county, ND to Valentine and Helen (Welk) Mastel. Aloys attended a one room rural school. On September 29, 1952, Aloys married Angela Schatz of Zeeland, ND at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Zeeland. They moved to a farm 16 miles north of Zeeland where they operated a grain and dairy farm. In 1968 they bought a farm near Ellendale and continued dairy farming until 1982 when they diversified into stock cattle.  Aloys also did custom work for other farmers such as baling, combining, cattle-buying and hay-stack moving operations.

Aloys and Angela found time to travel. They experienced cities like Frankfurt, Rome and Mexico City. They traveled throughout the United States and spent time in Canada. Aloys was a member of his church choir starting in 1955. He is a lifetime Knights of Columbus member of which he was Deputy Grand Knight for several years. Aloys enjoyed spending time with his family, going to the livestock sale barns, square dancing and playing cards. 

Aloys is survived by his wife: Angela Mastel; five daughters: Marilyn (Duane) Baer, Bernadette (Roger) McNeil, Monica (Bob) Dale, JoAnn (Francis) Brager, Annette (Pete) Groves; two sons: Dr. Glenn (Dr. Marit Hordvik) Mastel, Wayne (Felisa) Mastel; 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Delores Hulm Kramer, Alvina (Willie) Voller; four brothers: Willie (Virginia) Mastel, Leo (Rita) Mastel, Gene (Marlene) Mastel, Duane (Carleen) Mastel. He was preceded in death by his son: Lloyd Mastel; his parents; Godson: Gerold Hulm; nephew: Daniel Mastel and two brothers-in-law: Pius Hulm and Leo Kramer.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30am Saturday, December 9 at St. Helena’s Catholic Church, Ellendale with Father Jason Asselin officiating. Visitation is Friday 6-8:30pm and prayer service at 7:30pm at Hoven Funeral Chapel, Ellendale. Burial is at St. Helena’s Cemetery.
