William G. Butler was born in 1786 in Virginia. I think he is the son of Margaret Goode and Henry Rankin Butler. He married Mary Spears on October 29, 1819. They had nine children in their 25 years together. William was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church in Rankin County, Mississippi. Liberty was organized in 1840. By 1843 Liberty did not have a deacon for their church. Liberty requested that Brother William Butler with draw from Brandon Baptist Church to serve as deacon of Liberty Baptist. In July 15th. William, his wife Mary, and their daughter Susan Hill Butler joined Liberty Baptist church. During his many years with this church he served as deacon, clerk, and on the executive committee. In the 1860 slave schedule he is shown to have 6 slaves, so I am guessing that this family was somewhat effluent in Rankin co. Mississippi.
On November 1867 Liberty granted Brother Butler a letter of dismissal, so he could move to a distant state. His wife had died by this time and it is thought that he moved to Angelina County Texas , to help two of his daughters , Mary Hill Butler Davis and Ann Elizabeth Butler Grandberry, with a cattle drive.
In 1870 census Brother Butler is back in Mississippi living with his son Thomas, he is 73.
