Melanie "Aunty Mae" Helm
One of the last of the Molokai kupuna (elders) who advised a generation of young Hawaiians reclaiming their heritage, died Sunday in Honolulu after a lengthy illness. She was 78.
Aunty Mae was best known in Hawaii as the mother of George Helm Jr., the Hawaiian musician and spiritual leader of the Protect Kahoolawe Ohana who disappeared in March 1977.
But among friends on Molokai, she will be remembered primarily as someone who always welcomed people in her home, fed the homeless and kept her faith in the church.
She is survived by sons, Larry, Greg, Zachary and Adolph; daughters, Stacey Crivello and Georgia Helm; a sister, Virginia Chong; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call 6-9 pm Friday, May 29, at St. Sophia's Church, and from 8 am to noon, Saturday, May 30, at the church. Mass 10:30 am at the church. Burial at Hoolehua cemetery.
