Donna Jean Scott Ball
June 11, 2014
Donna Jean Scott Ball was born in Akron, Ohio on Aug. 17, 1926, to Roy Scott and Hazel Nogle Scott. On June 11, 2014, at the age of 87, she went home to be with the Lord.
Donna grew up in Akron, as the fourth child of five. She graduated high school with honors, at the age of 16. After her freshman year of college she met and married her husband, Montie Ball. At the time, he was stationed in Casper, Wyo., She and her sister Eva, traveled by train from Akron to Casper for a civil wedding ceremony. During that trip, the train had standing room only and by the time they reached Casper, they were covered in coal dust. At the time of Montie’s death in 2002, they had been married 58 years.
After Montie’s discharge from the service, they moved to Columbus, Ohio where they were blessed with three children. They lived in Columbus, until 1960,  when they moved to Benson, Ariz. to join Donna’s brother, Glenn, who had previously moved to Benson and her sister Esther Alllafretta (Freddie), in Tucson.
Over the years, she was a homemaker, taking a couple of jobs during lean times. She worked for Peter Wilharm at Benson Lumber, as his bookkeeper for about two years and at the Quarter Horse Motel for a time.
Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Montie Ball; mother, hazel Nogle Scott; father, Roy Scott; brothers, Glenn Scott, Elden (Bunny) Scott; sisters, Eva Ellsworth, Esther (Freddie) Lawrence; granddaughter, Amber Darlene Ball.
She is survived by her three children, Mona Hoppes (Roger), Keith Ball, Mark Ball (Bonnie); five grandchildren, Phillip Hoppes (Jennifer), Audrey Hoppes, Quentin Ball, Amy Smith, Cassandra Ball; four great-grandchildren and many loved nieces and nephews.
Donna was in assisted living for the last seven years of her life. Many of her caregivers have relayed to her family that she was a cheerful resident and over the years they’ve been blessed by her singing. She loved to sing and would sing to anyone, at any time, if she was motivated to do so. She will truly be missed.
Services were officiated by Pastor Larry Pondoff on Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church, followed by interment at Cochise Garden of Rest.
