George W. Alexander was the child of Lewis Alexander (b. c1825 in Germany) and M. (Kostner) Alexander. Sources, including those created with the input from George, vary in George's birthplace- either St. Louis, Missouri, USA, or Rhenish, Bavaria, Germany, or Frankfort, Germany. His census records state arrival in 1862 or 1863 (per 1900 and 1910 US Federal censuses, respectively), so he was most likely b. Germany.

George W. married Rosannah Gaffney (1847-1882) at St. Patrick's Church in Memphis, Tennessee on 14 April 1872. He worked as a clerk in 1880 at a __ mill, as a clerk in 1900, and at Wm Schotten & Co. in 1893, also as a clerk. The 1910 census states he was an "Engineer" in the "Stationary" industry. He also had jobs as a foreman in a starch factory, and as a telegrapher.

George and Rosannah had six children that included a pair of twins, but only one survived infancy: George H. Alexander, b. 1879. The other children were Luke and John, twins b. 1873, Katherine, b. 1874, Rosannah, b. 1875, and Mary, b. 1882; all died in the year they were born. George and Rosannah also raised Rosannah's son from her first marriage, James Michael Boyle (1869-1934), who was adopted by George and used the Alexander name.

Their last child, Mary, was b. 7 Jun 1882 and died 8 Jun 1882. Rosannah died just 2 days later, on June 10, so her death and that of the baby could have been due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

George married Emma Louise ____ in 1885. In the 1900 US Federal census he was living with Emma, but by 1910 he was listed by himself, though also listed as on his second marriage. (There is an Emma L. Alexander buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery (FAG#104420206), who d. in 1903 and may be this wife.) George died in the City Infirmary 12 years later.
