LaVon Gerken, 82, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Sunday, December 10, 2017, at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, December 15, at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Patrick Sparling officiating. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 AM at the church. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Friday from 10:00 AM until service time at the church. Inurnment will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery - 12.5 miles north. Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Lutheran Hour Ministries.

LaVon Marie Gerken was born on September 20, 1935, to F. Martin and Hilda (Brandt) Berends on the family farm in rural Platte County, Nebraska. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church on April 10, 1949. LaVon was a student at St. John’s Lutheran School from first through eighth grade. During those years she enjoyed activities with the Walther League and the Platte County Spelling Bee. She was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church on April 10, 1949. LaVon graduated from Kramer High School in 1953. After graduation, she worked at the Columbus Telegram until she married, but continued to “proofread” the Telegram at home (as a hobby) until 2016.

LaVon married Earl Gerken on April 28, 1968, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with three children: Janelle, Eric, and Jonathan. LaVon served her Lord with her homemaking and organizational skills. For many years she scheduled acolytes and organized the “cradle roll” for Immanuel Lutheran Church. Her hobbies included sewing and crafts, church and school volunteering, and following her children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Son: Jonathan Gerken of Cottonwood, MN
Four Grandchildren: Sumithra, Kalpit & Vijayalakshmi Wemhoff
