Gerald "Jerry" L. Schlei

Manitowoc - Gerald "Jerry" Lee Schlei, age 80, a Manitowoc resident, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 11, 2017, surrounded by love at home.

Jerry was born on September 12, 1937 in Manitowoc. He was the son of the late William and Myrtle Ellestadt Schlei. Jerry attended Lincoln High School in Manitowoc. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a map draftsman and was given an honorable discharge on September 27, 1957. On March 29, 1971 he married his loving wife, Elizabeth M. Hampton in Iron Mountain, MI. They enjoyed being active with their YMCA membership, frequently traveling, attending various festive events and visiting with family as much as possible. Jerry was employed in the ship yard as a pipefitter at Burger Boat for over 25 years and was a member of the Local Pipefitters Union. Once retired, Jerry worked part-time for Holy Family Memorial Medical Center as a medical courier for 17 years. Jerry was an avid aviator, having built his own airplane (which was presented at the EAA Fly In) and was an EAA member for a number of years. He enjoyed working on and discussing airplanes and other forms of aviation with his friends at the Manitowoc County Airport. Jerry also had a passion for restoring and building furniture. He was an experienced craftsman and frequently enjoyed giving his creations as gifts to his family.

Jerry was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 46 years: Elizabeth; his children who greatly loved him: Dawn Turner, Jerry Schlei, Bob Miller, Todd Miller, Kim Burish ( Mike Hallwachs) all of Manitowoc; Angie (Jay) St. Louis, Chandler, AZ; Jenny Schlei (Josh Schulte) Green Bay; brother-in- law: Eugene Dvorachek; three sisters-in-law: Jean (Russ) Oman, Joann (Mike) Kortas, and Carol Sigmund; eleven grandchildren: Stacy (Brad) Mertens, Little Suamico; Joshua Burish, Milwaukee; Corey (Lexi) Burish, Roxanne and Ashley Hansen, Nathaniel Miller, Emily Ducat, Ashley Turner, Brad Turner, all of Manitowoc; Juliet Osinga- Schlei, Green Bay; Samantha St. Louis, Chandler, AZ; ten great grandchildren: Mila, Alania, Jameson, Elsie, Maddox, Jasmine, Dayyon, Robbie, Jayce, and Tommy. He was preceded in death by his parents: William and Myrtle (Ellestadt) Schlei; two sisters: Sharon Dvorachek and Sandy Schlei; and one brother: William Schlei Jr. Everyone knew Jerry for his fun loving, friendly, positive attitude and will be greatly missed by many.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017 at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. Officiating will be Deacon Alan Boeldt. Relatives and friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Following the funeral service military rites will be accorded at the funeral home by the American Legion Drews Bleser Post #88 with a luncheon to follow for relatives and friends at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center located on the south property of the funeral home. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc.
