George H. was the fifth of six children born to George W. Alexander (1847-1915) and Rosannah (Gaffney) Alexander (1847-1882), but the only child who survived infancy. His mother died just after delivering the sixth child in 1882, when he was just 3 years old.

George H. became a lighting designer and apparently also designed some furniture for the Globe Warnicke Co. in St. Louis. He married Minnie Schoor on 31 May 1902 in St. Charles, MO, and they had six children: Raymond Bruce Alexander (1904-1991), Ruth Nadine (Alexander) Lee (1906-1953), Charles Shaler Alexander (1908-1976), Mildred Rosalie (Alexander) Peterson (1912-1981), and twins Catharine Alexander (1918-1988, never married), and Ella Mae (Alexander) Fiegel (1918-1970).
