Stewart Leroy Brown, 95, of La Grange, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, December 13, 2017.

Stewart was born in Friendswood, Texas on June 3, 1922, the son of Allen W. Brown and Zora (Davis) Brown. He married Betty Sue Shields and they were married for 31 years. After the death of his first wife, he married Lorene Youngblood and they were married for 27 years.

As a young man he was raised in the Quaker religion. His grandfather Frank J. Brown founded the Quaker settlement that became present day Friendswood, Texas. Quakers were also known as the “Society of Friends.” Mr. Brown graduated from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas with a degree in Biblical Studies. He later joined and served in the First Baptist Church in Brenham and La Grange, Texas most of his life. In his later years, he joined and was active in the Methodist Church in Itasca, Texas and attended First United Methodist Church in La Grange.

He served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant during World War II. Stewart was a business owner of Brown’s Quality Feed & Service in La Grange for 15 years. He also was a dairy farmer and a cattle rancher.

He is survived by a daughter, Melanie Breneman of La Grange; two sons: Jim Brown and wife, Wanda, of Brenham; Mark Brown and wife, Beth, of La Grange; sister, Carol Cline Vaughn of Friendswood; six grandchildren: Rachel Breneman; Jodi Breneman; Rodney Brown; Melissa Rusek and husband, Mike; Andra Erickson and husband, Dan; Jeb Brown and wife, Gayla; thirteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty; second wife, Lorene; two brothers: Glen and Allen Brown; three sisters: Phyllis Patterson, Versa Pearson and Margaret Lane.

Visitation will be held at Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home, 208 W. Pearl St., La Grange and at the First United Methodist Church, 1215 N. Von Minden Rd., La Grange. Funeral Services will follow at the First United Methodist Church with burial at the Rutersville Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123 (www.cancer.org) or a charity of one’s choice.
