Albert W "Ruff" Hopp, 69, of 911 N. California Ave. died Tuesday at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. Mr. Hopp, a lifelong Hastings resident, was the owner and operator of Pla-Mor Music Inc. He was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and Elks Lodge No 159.
Mr. Hopp was a former outstanding athlete at Hastings High School and Hastings College where he was a member of both football and basketball teams. He was also known for his swimming and golfing ability. In 1940 he was city golf champion, defeating his brother Wally, in the finals. He was an All-State player in both football and basketball in high school.
After completing his college career, his interest in athletics continued. He was a volunteer assistant coach to Eldon Miller at Hastings High School. Their 1940 team won the state championship. His brother Wally was a member of the team. He later was an assistant coach and golf coach at St. Cecilia High School and also coached a Midget League football team.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne of Hastings; two daughters, Mrs. Willie (Berdina) Wallace of Denver, Colo. and Mrs. Kerry (Ronna) Johnson of Burbank, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Dean (Shirley) Bentz of Mesa, Ariz. Mrs. Jerry (Delores) Yeager of Hastings and Mrs. George (Mary Ann) Benner of Omaha; four brothers, Johnny and Wally both of Hastings, William of Redondo Beach, Calif. and Clifford of Columbus; and two grandchildren.
