Professional Baseball Player. John Gerhard Sutthoff played Major League Baseball for six seasons and was referred to as "Sunny Jack" by his teammates because of his pleasant personality. A son of German immigrants, he made his Major League debut with the Washington Senators on September 15, 1898 when he was 25 years old. He was a right-handed pitcher and played in the minor leagues during his early years as a professional, only making a few appearances a year until 1903, following a 24 win season with Indianapolis' championship minor league ballclub. His first full season in the Majors was his finest as he started 27 games for the Cincinnati Reds, compiling a record of 16 wins with 9 losses, while 21 of his starts were complete games. He also tossed 3 shutouts and posted a 2.80 Earned Run Average. In the middle of the season the following year, he was traded to Philadelphia, where he wrapped up his Major League Career. His contract was sold to a minor league team five weeks after hurling a 3 hit shutout against the first place New York Giants in 1905. He toiled in the minors for another three years before finally calling it quits. He appeared in 88 games in the Majors, with 31 wins against 40 losses, threw 55 complete games, and recorded a 3.65 Earned Run Average. After baseball, he returned to his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio and successfully operated a saloon on Price Hill, only to have it closed down in 1920 to comply with Prohibition.
